History of the department

The establishment of the Department of History and Ukrainian Studies in 1992 reflected the general trend of the time to implement a new concept of humanitarian education, the introduction of Ukrainian disciplines in higher education and the organization of departments that would provide their teaching.

The department was established on the basis of the department “Political History”, whose activities in 1989 – 1992 prepared the transition to the introduction of disciplines of Ukrainian studies. The availability of qualified teachers played an important role. For several years of teaching political history, in the conditions of heated discussions in the second half of the 80’s about the “white spots” of the past, they developed new methodological approaches based on universal values and not related to the rigid ideologisation of social disciplines.
