The establishment of the Department of History and Ukrainian Studies in 1992 reflected the general trend of the time to implement a new concept of humanitarian education, the introduction of Ukrainian disciplines in higher education and the organization of departments that would provide their teaching.
The department was established on the basis of the department “Political History”, whose activities in 1989 – 1992 prepared the transition to the introduction of disciplines of Ukrainian studies. The availability of qualified teachers played an important role. For several years of teaching political history, in the conditions of heated discussions in the second half of the 80’s about the “white spots” of the past, they developed new methodological approaches based on universal values and not related to the rigid ideologisation of social disciplines. The new department includes teachers of business Ukrainian, who previously worked at the Department of Foreign Languages. The newly created Department of History and Ukrainian Studies relied on the support of the Rector’s Office and became a part of the Humanitarian Center of HIIT.
Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor MF Dmytrochenko, an experienced teacher and leader, a specialist in the field of history of the formation of the management system and social relations in the agricultural sector of the economy was elected head of the department. He led the formation of the principles of educational, methodological, research and educational work of the department.
For several years, teachers of the department took an active part in the discussion at scientific and methodological conferences, on the pages of the newspaper “Kirovets” the problem of humanization and humanitarianization of technical education, the place of Ukrainian studies in this process. In the first half of the 1990s, they assisted teachers of general and special subjects in the transition to teaching in the Ukrainian language. In 1993-1996, under the leadership of Professor MF Dmytrochenko, the UkrSURT (then the academy) had a commission to discuss the draft Constitution of Ukraine and the proposals submitted to it.
In 2010 the department was headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Blyznyuk LM
Since 2011, the department was transformed by the decision of the Academic Council of UkrSURT. The Department of History and Ukrainian Studies, headed by Professor OP Guzhva, continued its activities, the main disciplines of which were the history of Ukraine and Ukrainian culture, Political Science, History of Railway Transport, Business Rhetoric.
