This synopsis of lectures examines the problem of the possibility and feasibility of converting internal combustion engines from diesel and gasoline to other, alternative fuels. Physico-chemical and operational characteristics of the most promising types of alternative fuels are given and compared with the characteristics of gasoline and diesel fuel. The positive and negative consequences for the internal combustion engine, service personnel and the environment from the use of one or another type of alternative fuel are analyzed. Here are some recommendations on possible ways to adapt modern internal combustion engines to the use of non-petroleum fuels.
