Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport (UkrSURT)

Founded in 1930, Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport (UkrSURT) is a leading Ukrainian higher education institution in the fields of and digital technologies on transport. The university is located in Kharkiv, the major scientific and educational hub of Eastern Ukraine. Today, UkrSURT educates over 6,000 students, including international students, which confirms its reputation and the high level of trust in its educational quality.

UkrSURT consists of 5 faculties, the Educational and Scientific Center of Humanities, and 30 departments. More than 300 faculty members work at the university, including 52 Doctors of Science and over 200 PhDs. UkrSURT offers 38 undergraduate programs, 32 master’s programs, and 8 PhD programs. All study programs are accredited by the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and are aligned with the standards of the European Higher Education Area.

The university’s main research directions include:

  • development of technologies to improve the energy efficiency of railway transport and power supply systems;
  • integration of renewable energy sources into power systems and improving power quality;
  • automation and digitalization of train operation processes and railway infrastructure;
  • development and implementation of computer and information technologies for train traffic management and increasing railway throughput;
  • systems for operation and technical diagnostics of locomotives and rolling stock;
  • construction and rehabilitation of buildings and transport infrastructure facilities;
  • development of intelligent transport management technologies, logistics, and transportation safety.

The results of UkrSURT’s research have been implemented at enterprises of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”, Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works, Dniprospetsstal Metallurgical Plant, Northern Mining and Processing Plant, Zaporizhzhia Titanium and Magnesium Combine, Kremenchuk Steel Plant, Zaporizhzhia Ferroalloy Plant, Illich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol, Marganets Mining and Processing Plant, Azot Chemical Plant, Kyiv-Dnipro Interindustrial Railway Transport Company, Kharkiv branch of Ukrdiprodor – Kharkivdiproshlyakh, Scientific-Production Enterprise “Khartron-Energo Ltd”, as well as in a number of private companies and organizations.

UkrSURT has modern laboratories for energy and transport research, computer centers, a library, educational buildings, and student dormitories. In 2025, to strengthen applied and fundamental research, the university established the Innovation Science Park “Algorithm of Innovations” and the Shared Research Facilities Center “Energy-Efficient Technologies and Resource Saving.” Particular attention is paid to digital infrastructure: since 2020, the university has actively used distance learning systems, as well as software tools for modeling processes in energy and transport systems. In 2025, despite the war in Ukraine, the university opened a laboratory for renewable energy and robotics.

The mission of UkrSURT is to train competitive specialists for the transport industry and to advance applied and fundamental research. The vision is to form a modern educational and research center integrated into the European and global research space. Strategic priorities include improving education quality, developing and promoting innovation and research, upgrading the research base, digitalization, and expanding international partnerships.

International cooperation aims to integrate UkrSURT into the global educational and research space. The university actively participates in Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, Jean Monnet, BridgeUSA, Twinning, DAAD, and other international research grant programs. UkrSURT maintains more than 55 cooperation agreements with universities in the EU, USA, and Asia. Academic mobility and internships for students and faculty are also among the key priorities.

The university operates the Educational and Scientific Center for International Cooperation and Education and a dedicated Project Office that provide administration and support for grants and partnership programs. Administrative structures, such as the Center for Higher Education Quality Assurance and the Educational-Methodical Department, have significant experience in preparing and coordinating licensing and accreditation processes.

Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport is a modern academic and research center that combines the traditions of the Ukrainian engineering school with cutting-edge innovative research and international collaboration.
