In 1930, the general engineering training of students was carried out by the “Technical Mechanics” department, which from 1930 to 1934 was headed by Prof. L.G. Lenevich
In 1934, by dividing this department, the following departments were created: “Theory of Mechanisms and Machine Parts”, the heads of which were prof. I.Yu. Lubarskyi and Prof. H.G. Verbovsky (1945-1956); “Theoretical Mechanics”, its supervisors were prof. I.M. Babakov, Prof. D.G. Kovtun (1945-1985), prof. V.A. Potichenko (1985-1995), Prof. A.M. Tolkachev (1995-1997); “Resistance of materials” – head of prof. Ya.V. Stolyarov. In 1956, the department “Theory of Mechanisms and Machine Parts” was divided into the departments “Theory of Mechanisms and Machines” and “Machine Parts and Lifting and Transporting Machines”, which were respectively headed by prof. V.T. Sereda (1956-1985) and Professor H.G. Verbovskyi (1956-1973), Assoc. V.M. Khinevych (1974-1982), Assoc. P.T. Klepach (1982-1985). In 1985, by unifying these departments, the department “Theory of Mechanisms and Machine Parts” was created, headed by Prof. V.T. Sereda (1985-1986) and Prof. V.I. Moroz (1986-1997).
In accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the Academy, in 1997, the “Mechanics and Design of Machines” (M and DM) department was created by merging the “Theory of Mechanisms and Machine Parts” and “Theoretical Mechanics” departments, the head of which was elected Prof. V.I. Moroz.
For the longest time, the departments on the basis of which the “Mechanics and Machine Design” department was formed were headed by professors D.G. Kovtun (1907-2003), H.G. Verbovskyi, V.T. Sereda (1906-1993)
