History of the department

The Finance, Accounting and Audit Department was created on October 1, 2022 as a result of the merger of the “Public and Corporate Finance Management” department with the “Accounting and Audit” department.

Department of “Management of State and Corporate Finances” since its foundation (July 1, 1995), the department was called “Finance”, which was headed by Professor Oleksandr Volodymyrovych Kolesnikov for 17 years.

At the time the department was established, our academic staff was represented by 9 economics lecturers, including academic experts like Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor O. G. Babych; T. O. Dikareva; senior lecturer O. V. Iliukhina; Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor L. I. Kyrychenko; Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor O. A. Kryvoruchenko; Ph.D. in Economics, Professor N. M. Krykhtina; senior lecturer O. V. Salenko; Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor O. D. Steshenko. They constantly got a high rating in the students’ and employees’ opinion polls, and were actively engaged in educational and tutorial work.

Since 2014, the department has been named “Public and Corporate Finance Management”. Establishing the department marked the development of an important activity area of the University, the creation of scientific and academic basis to strengthen the Financial Planning and Analysis staff of the Ukrainian enterprises in large industrial regions with the new generation of qualified financial experts, accountants and auditors.

The Department trains specialists on specialty 072 “Finance, Banking and Insurance” (Bachelor’s and Master’s qualification levels), provides postgraduate studies for the citizens who want to obtain a second higher education or undergo an advanced training, and provides short-time training on the basis of the “University-Technical School” complex comprising Ukrainian colleges of the second and third accreditation levels.

Since October 1, 2012 to August 2022, the department was headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor Iraida Yu. Zaitseva.

The “Accounting and Audit” department has a more ancient history. The history of the department began with the establishment of the engineering and economic faculty of the Kharkiv Operational and Traction Institute of Railway Transport (later the Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineers). Thus, in 1934, the Department of Transportation Cost Estimating was created, which worked with full-time students, and the department began to train part-time specialists for transport companies in 1967.

Since 1981, the department, which already had the name of the department of accounting, began to train specialists on a full-time basis. The first graduation of specialists took place in 1985. From the first years of the department’s existence, it was headed by Dr. Tech. of Science, Prof., Candidate of Science economy Sciences V. M. Orlov. Later, the department was headed by leading specialists in railway transport accounting: candidate. economy of Science, Assoc. H.K. Krymius, V.G. Andreev, P.F. Semernin, A.P. Bocharnikov, N.V. Chebanova, O.G. Kirdina.

Today, the newly created department “Finance, accounting and audit” was headed by Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Olena Hryhorivna Kirdina. The creation of the department marked the beginning of the development of an important direction of the university’s activity: the creation of a scientific and pedagogical base for strengthening the financial and economic services of enterprises in powerful industrial regions of Ukraine with qualified personnel of financiers, accountants and auditors of the new generation.

The current department of “Finance, accounting and audit” is a highly professional team that not only ensures the educational process at a high level, but also carries out scientific research. Heads of structural divisions of the Ministry of Infrastructure and of JSC “Ukrainian Railways”, heads of financial and economic services of railways, banks and other financial institutions, as well as leading scientists of higher educational institutions of the city of Kharkiv and Ukraine are actively involved in teaching and research work. Educational disciplines taught at the department are equipped with textbooks, educational and teaching-methodical guides prepared by the department’s teachers.

Today, the Department of “Finance, Accounting and Audit” of the Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport is a cohesive creative team that, having absorbed all the assets of previous generations and world financial thought, solves complex macro- and micro-level problems and carries out its own scientific developments.
