History of the faculty of “Railway Operation and Management” roots back to the postrevolutionary years of the XX century. In 1918 р. in response to the proposition of M. I. Sribnytskyi, A. M. Hlikman, and other scientists on the basis of Kyiv Institute of National Economy there has been founded the educational faculty of the Operation of Railway Lines Connections which has had two main departments such as: Operation of Railway Connections and Stations.

In 1927 the faculty was transferred to Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and in 1929 there was founded Kyiv Institute of Railway Connections. It included three faculties: Operational, Economic, and Constructional. In that period Operational faculty had three departments: Transportation Operation (headed by M. H. Holebnovskyi), Stations (headed by the Full Professor P. M. Suprunenko), and Railway Operation. The work of the Deanery was headed by Full Professor of the Department of Stations P. M. Suprunenko.

Since 1934 the Operational Faculty has been a part of Kharkiv Institute of Railway Engineers founded in 1930.  In that period the faculty was headed by Full Professors P. M. Suprunenko and A. P. Holovchenko, Associate Professors A. I. Prybiehin and V. V. Povorozhenko.

At the times of faculty founding and developing there worked such famous scientists as: Y. B. Peisakhzon who took part in the preparation of the first text-books on the organization of high-speed railway lines; V. S. Larionov and L. L. Petryshyn who were the founders of the theory of standardization of railway maneuver work; I. R. Veber, H. S. Balandiuk, V. V. Povorozhenko, V. M. Orlov, I. D. Boiko, M. R. Yushchenko, and V. T. Kiptelyi. In 1930s the postgraduate education was obtained by M. Y. Stefanov, A. I. Tarnovskyi, H. S. Zakrevskyi, I. I. Nikelin who became famous educationalists and scientists.

In 1938 V. T. Kiptelyi (from 1938 to 1968) was appointed as the Associate Professor of the Operational Faculty. Prewar years were marked by high quantity of well-trained engineers-specialists on railway operation.

During the Second World War the faculty was evacuated to Tashkent where the teaching staff and students were combining the education in the evening with the work on the front line. Having returned to Kharkiv they actively participated in the process of rebuilding of the city as well as of the institute.

In 1960s on the faculty basis there was created the advanced laboratory on the organization of train traffic which gave possibility to teach students under the conditions close to real ones.
