Some events in the Department history:
among of the first teachers of the Construction works and constructions Department were N.A. Belyakova, P.S. Doroshenko, Y.V. Lukashchyk, O.P. Mchedlov-Petrosyan, F.A. Pivnev;
in the 1950s and 1960s, well-known architects, authors of the project of the South Station at the Kharkiv Railway station, worked at the Buildings Department. Ph.D., Assoc. Limar E.A., Ph.D., Assoc. Lutskyi M.S.;
1950-70s – the main achievements of scientists, postgraduate students, graduates of the Building Materials Department are mainly related to the development of the scientific school of Prof. Mchedlov-Petrosyan O.P. and consisted in the use of ideas and methods of physical chemistry for the theory of formation, hardening, corrosion and durability of silicate materials, in particular, cement and concrete, as well as in improving the technology of production of building materials and products, in particular binders, concrete, prefabricated reinforced concrete structures, reinforced concrete sleeper:

Department of Building materials in the 1960s.
1955 – 8 lecturers and employees used to work at the Building Materials Department;
from 1955 to 1976, 39 candidates of sciences were trained at the Building Materials Department;
1959 – 7 lecturers used to work at the Bridges and Structures Department (assistant professors G.I. Yudin, F.A. Pivnev, N.A. Belyakova, Yu.S. Kovalenko, senior lecturer F.G. Tomilin, assistants Z. M. Kapinos, L.R. Grigoryev), 3 employees of teaching and auxiliary staff (head of the laboratory S.S. Farennikov, laboratory assistants Yu.A. Pleshkov, S.O. Ishchenko (Golub));
1965 – on the initiative of prof. Mchedlov-Petrosyan O.P. by the order of the Ministry of Railways of the USSR No. 45/ЦЗ dated 25.05.1965, the industry research laboratory of the Ministry of Railways of the USSR “Reinforced concrete sleepers” (since 1994 “Rail bases and special reinforced concrete”) was created at the Construction materials Department of the KhIIIT;
1965-75 – for 10 years, the Department of Building Materials carried out scientific and research works under business contracts in the amount of about 500,000 rubles, the annual economic effect of which amounted to about 5 million rubles; more than 400 printed works were published, including more than 60 in foreign countries; 21 applications for inventions were submitted, 12 copyright certificates were received; 65 reports were made at 9 international and 42 all-Union conferences (Aberdeen, Scotland; Berlin; Budapest; Warsaw; Washington; Weimar, Germany, etc.);
1960s-70s – the Construction Materials Department published thematic collections of scientific works “Proceedings of the KhIIT” edited by prof. O.P. Mchedlov-Petrosyan: “Issue XXXIX” (1960); “Research of construction materials using modern methods” (1962, issue 54), “Issues of production intensification and improvement of the quality of construction materials” (1965, issue 73); “Reinforced concrete sleepers” (1966, issue 86; 1969, issue 109), “Controlled structural formation in the production of construction materials” (K.: Budivelnyk, 1968); “Technological maintenance of durability of reinforced concrete sleepers” (1971, issue 122); “Issues of durability of reinforced concrete sleepers” (1971, issue 135); “Decreasing the material intensity and increasing the durability of construction products” (K.: Budivelnyk, 1974);
in the 1960s, the research works of the Building Materials Department received: the second prize at the Republican Review of the Scientific and Technical Society of the Building Industry, two certificates of the Central Board of the All-Union Chemical Society named after D. I. Mendeleev (1966), diplomas of the VDNG of the USSR (1961 and 1966); the average age of the department’s employees is 30 years;
1982-1990 – under the leadership of the heads of Building Materials Department, prof. Biryukov A.I. and Bridges and structures Department Assoc. Yermak E.M. a comprehensive reconstruction of the educational and laboratory base of the departments was carried out with the addition of new educational and laboratory buildings and their equipping with modern research and testing equipment;
1980s – the Department of Building Materials used to closely cooperate with the related department of the Moscow Institute of Railway Transport Engineers (MIIT), the research works of the department’s scientists are published in the Interuniversity Collections of Scientific Works of MIIT “Increasing the Durability of Concrete Transport Structures” (1980, issue 662; 1982, issue .714; 1986, issue 784);
1986-92 – the Building Materials Department under the editorship of prof. Biryukov A.I. the periodic edition of the Interuniversity collection of scientific works of the KhIIIT “Intensification of precast concrete production” is published (1986; 1990, issue 13; 1992, issue 18);
1994 – at the initiative of prof. Staroselskyi O.O. the industry research laboratory of the Ministry of Transport of Ukraine “Corrosion and corrosion protection of railway constructions and structures” was created;
1995, 97 – on the initiative of Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine F.D. Ovcharenko. and Prof. Plugin A.M. the 1st and 2nd International Scientific and Technical Conferences “Development of Technical Chemistry in Ukraine” were held at UkrDAZT, conference proceedings were published;
1996 – edited by prof. Plugin A.M. the thematic Interuniversity collection of scientific works of KharDAZT “Creation of new composite materials and improvement of operational reliability and service life of structures and structures on railway transport” is published (issue 26 in 2 volumes);
1998 – the Specialized Academic Council D64.820.02 was opened for awarding scientific degrees of doctor and candidate of technical sciences in the specialties 05.23.05 Building materials and products and 05.23.01 Building constructions, buildings and structures, the initiator of the creation and the head of the Council – prof. Plugin A.M.;
since 2000, the thematic collections of scientific works of UkrDAZT “Problems of reliability and durability of engineering structures and buildings in railway transport” have been published (2000, issue 37; 2004, issue 63; 2006, issue 77; 2007, issue 87, dedicated to the 90th anniversary O.P. Mchedlov-Petrosyan; 2009, issue 109; 2010, issue 115; 2011, issue 122, 125);
2006, 07, 11 – the 1st, 2nd and 3rd International Conferences “Problems of reliability and durability of engineering structures and buildings in railway transport” were held; scientists and specialists from Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia (Moscow, Belgorod), Ukraine (Donetsk, Kyiv, Luhansk, Lviv, Rivne, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi) participated in the conferences; conference reports are published in the same-named thematic collections of scientific works of UkrDAZT (issues 77, 87, 122, 125)
