The Department of Physical Education and Sports of Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport was founded in 1935.
Its first leader (1935-1941, 1947-1965) was Artamonov Grigory Nikolaevich – Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in athletics, a member of the USSR national team, the champion of the USSR in throwing.
From 1941 to 1947 the department was headed by Pavlo Hryhorovych Svirenko – senior. teacher, athletics coach, who raised the USSR champion, 3-time world champion in decathlon, former student of the academy V. Starodubtsev.
From 1965 to 1973 The head of the department was Klepchinov Igor Petrovich – master of sports of the USSR in bench shooting, honored coach of the USSR, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. In 1975 he organized a section on bench shooting, trained 2 masters of sports of international class, 5 masters of sports of the USSR.
In 1973-1974 the department was headed by Denisov Igor Alexandrovich.
From 1974 to 1982 and from 1987 to 1994 Vernigorov Vladislav Konstantinovich – Associate Professor, Master of Sports of the USSR in athletics.
From 1982 to 1984 Grankin Vladimir Petrovich – Master of Sports of the USSR in classical wrestling.
In 1984-1987 – Sokha Alexander Vasilyevich.
From 1994-2013 – Associate Professor Viktor Shevchenko.
From 2013-2016 Head of the Department Associate Professor Buts Alla Mykolayivna – MSMK in cycling.
From 2016 to the present, the head of the department is Shepelenko Tetyana Valeriyivna.
In 2002-2003 academic year. the Department of Physical Education and Sports was transferred to the 4th educational building (Foundation) of the University.
On September 30, 2004, the stadium of Pivdenny University was opened. In the new gyms and stadium, students have the opportunity to prepare and show the best results in competitions, which increases the sports reputation of the university.
