Humanitarian subjects have been taught at our university since its foundation in 1930. However, for many years, the departments of humanitarian subjects were included into different faculties. In 1990, in order to implement the concept of humanization and humanitarization of education, the Kharkiv Institute of Railway Transport Engineers established the Faculty of Humanities. When the Faculty of Humanities was established,itincluded the Departments of Political History, Philosophy and Sociology, Economic Theory, Foreign Languages, Physical Education and Sports. Associate professor of the Department of History and Philosophy Ivan D. Zagriychuk was the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities until 2004.
In 1992, the Department of Economic Theory was transferred from the Faculty of Humanities to the Faculty of Economics so that all economic subjects are taught at one faculty. In the same year, the Department of Political History was renamed as the Department of History and Ukrainian Studies.
In 1992-1993, the dean of the Faculty of Humanities was associate professor of the Department of history and Ukrainian Studies V. P. Shcherbina, in 1995-1996 – associate professor of the Department of History and Ukrainian Studies V. S. Azarkin.
In 1996, the Faculty of Humanities was renamed the Humanities Center, since none of the departments of the Faculty of Humanities were graduate and did not teach major subjects.
In 2004, the Humanities Center was again renamed as the Faculty of Humanities in order to increase the role of the humanitarian component of technical education.
In 2004, associate professor of the Department of History and Ukrainian Studies Kostiantyn Kolisnyk was elected Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.
Deputy deans of the Faculty of Humanities since the time of establishment were associate professor of the Department of History and Ukrainian Studies V. S. Azarkin, associate professor of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology V. I. Trikoza. From 2004 to 2015, associate professor of the Department of Foreign Languages Svitlana Neshko was Deputy Dean and then Deputy Director of the Educational and Scientific Center for Humanitarian Education.
In 2009, the Department of Linguistic and Professional Trainingalso became part of the Faculty of Humanities. In 2010, the structure of the Faculty of Humanities was changed again. The Department of Linguistics was created on the basis of the Ukrainian language section of the Department of History and the Department of Linguistic and Professional Training.
In 2012, the Faculty of Humanities was reorganized into the Educational and Scientific Center for Humanitarian Education. Since 2012, the Director of the Educational and Scientific Center for Humanitarian Education is associate professor of the Department of History and Linguistics Kostiantyn Kolisnyk. Deputy Director since 2015 is senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Languages Vitaliy Ye. Ponomarenko.
In 2016, the united Department of History and Linguistics was established on the basis of the Department of History and Department of Linguistics.
Since 2017, the Department of Foreign Languages has been teaching students majoring in 035 “Philology”, educational program “Translation and English language and literature”.
Currently, the Educational and Scientific Center for Humanitarian Education includes four departments: “History and Linguistics” (head of the Department – Associate Professor Lesya M. Bliznyuk), “Philosophy and Sociology” (head of the Department – Associate Professor Ivan V. Tolstov), “Foreign Languages” (head of the Department – Associate Professor Svitlana I. Neshko), “Physical Education and Sports” (head of the Department – associate professor Tetiana V. Shepelenko).
